UK Travel Will Require an ETA as of January 8, 2025

For travel on or after January 8, 2025, travelers from the United States and many other countries will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before transiting (passing through) or visiting the United Kingdom (UK). The new requirement intended to enhance border security applies to all travelers including children and those from visa-exempt countries.

The required ETA is a digital authorization linked to a traveler’s passport that grants permission to travel through or to the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) for periods of less than six months for the purpose of conducting business, tourism, or short-term studies. The ETA is valid for two years or until the expiration of the associated passport – whichever is first. It allows multiple entries into the UK during the period for which it is valid.

Beginning November 27, 2024, travelers from the US and other countries listed in the website linked above can apply for an ETA for travel that will occur on or after January 8, 2025. The application can be completed on the UK government website or on the UK ETA app, at a cost of 10 GBP (approx. $12.60). While ETA applications are expected to be processed quickly, travelers are encouraged to apply as early as possible to allow for any unexpected delays.

If you are traveling through or to the UK in 2025, please plan to complete the ETA process as soon as possible. Remember, the ETA is mandatory for all travelers, regardless of age. It will be linked to the traveler’s passport, so obtaining a new passport means you need to apply for a new ETA.

You can find additional information and updates on the United Kingdom Government website for entering and staying in the UK.
